Greek Yogurt Crema

A bowl filled with greek yogurt crema sauce with limes and a bowl of salt in the corner.

A healthy and high-protein spin on the classic Mexican crema sauce. It’s so good with tacos, bowls and salads!

Why you’ll love this Greek Yogurt Crema:

Easy to make- This sauce comes together in just a few minutes with only 4 ingredients. I always make extra to go with my breakfast tacos and fish tacos.

Healthy Spin- Traditional Mexican crema sauce is typically made with sour cream whereas this version is made with greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is higher in protein and the tanginess works well with the fresh lemon or lime juice.

Great for meal prep- I always make a double or triple batch of this sauce since it can last weeks (until the yogurt expires) in the refrigerator. I write the yogurt expiration date and tape it to the container so I know how long it lasts. It just needs a little stir if it starts to separate.

Ingredients:

Greek yogurt- Greek yogurt is used in place of sour cream for this crema recipe. Not only is it higher in protein and lower in fat, it also contains probiotics for your gut health. I prefer the thickness of greek yogurt because it becomes thinner with the addition of lime/lemon juice but you could use regular yogurt. Just make sure your using plain yogurt, not a sweetened or flavored version!

Limes or lemons- Fresh lime/lemon juice adds the perfect amount of acidity and brightness to this crema sauce.

Tajin or chili lime spice- I love the chili lime spice from Trader Joe’s. It’s very mild and adds another layer of acidity to this vegan dressing. If you don’t have access to a Trader Joe’s, Tajin is very similar and found in most grocery stores.

Hot sauce- I like a subtle touch of heat in this crema and typically use Cholula or Tapatio. However, you can use whatever hot sauce you like, substitute it for cayanne pepper instead or omit it all together.
